Akhmatova - Forgive Me

On p. 622 of The Complete Poems of Anna Akhmatova: Expanded Edition (1992) with translations by Judith Hemschemeyer and edited by Roberta Reeder, we find that Anna Akhmatova authored, in 1925, the following verse:

And you will forgive me everything:
Even that I am not young,
And even that baseless slander,
Like putrid smoke with a blessed flame,
Has been fused forever with my name.

In 1927, it appears she revisited this motif.

Forgive me, that I manage badly,
Manage badly but live gloriously,
That I leave traces of myself in my songs,
That I appeared to you in waking dreams.
Forgive me, though you’ll never know
That forever with my name,
Baseless slander has entwined itself,
Like acrid smoke with lively flame.
